Scholarships DUE in November

Southern Scholarship Foundation - Room and board at only FOUR state universities - Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida A & M, University of Florida, Florida State   University. See application for details. Deadline for Spring term is 11/1/09.   Deadline for Fall term is 3/1/10. Apply EARLY!

 

Gates Millennium Scholarship - Must be minority, GPA 3.3 or above, financial need, high school seniors only. 2010-2011 FAFSA MUST be filed by 2/1/10. Students and parents must complete 2009 tax return in order to file FAFSA. This is a highly competitive process, and students are urged to submit their nomination packets as soon as possible to ensure that their packets are complete and meet all requirements. See website for nomination forms, and other information.  DEADLINE for online applications is 1/11/10 - 11:59 pm. See Mrs. Roberts in Career Lab for assistance.  This is a very large application - DO NOT WAIT until the last minute.  You will need a Nominator AND a Recommender to do the application WITH you!  Ask your teachers NOW! 

 

Silver Garland Applications are Being Accepted!

The Silver Garland Award in each category is given to the student whose record of service to school and/or community best exemplifies the unselfish use of his or her abilites to help others.  Hours not accepted by the School District are eligible for this award.

The categories are: 

Art                Athletics                Citizenship                    English/Literature

Foreign Language         Journalism           Mathematics             Music

Performing Arts                 Science               Vocational/Technical

 

If you are a SENIOR and would like to apply for these prestigious awards, see Mrs. Roberts for application.  Deadline for completed applications back to Mrs. Roberts is November 13, 2009. If there is more than one candidate per category, the selection committee will make the final selection.

 

Ron Brown Scholar - Several $40,000 top prizes.  For academically talented, highly motivated African American high school seniors who intend to pursue undergraduate degrees full-time. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Applicants should demonstrate academic achievement, exhibit leadership ability, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need.  Selection process.  Essays, biography required.  Apply early and beat the November 15th deadline to be eligible for several other scholarships, however the final deadline for the ONE Scholarship is January 9, 2009. 

 

Grady Rayam Prize -  The “Negro Spiritual” Scholarship Foundation works with Orlando Opera to sponsor a vocal competition for sacred music performed by the solo voice in characteristic Negro spiritual style. Eleventh or twelfth grade level students who are of Afro-ethnic descent may enter a statewide vocal competition to rehearse and perform these arranged Negro spirituals. Students who enter the competition must work with a voice teacher to learn a new piece of music sent to them, and to meet the high vocal standards of this competition.   Deadline 12/5/09 for application.  $20 fee is required to apply which covers the music, list of titles, music copy for the assigned competition piece.

 

Lions Club Youth Exchange Scholarship - $1,000 awarded to outstanding Senior students in Lions District 35-0.  Deadline to Mrs. Roberts is November 16, 2009.  

 

Youth Heritage Oratorical Scholarship Program  sponsored by the Tampa Organization of Black Affairs.  Are you a great speaker?  Workshops will build confidence for the final judging in December.  Scoring based on Speech quality and speech presentation, and student application - as outlined in the application packet.   Short bio required with application.   Youth Public Speaking Event - Workshop in November in Tampa.  Open to 9th - 12th Grades!  Three Workshop Dates are MANDATORY.  2009/10 dates and speech topic have not been announced yet, but usually in late November through mid-December. 

 

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

Recognizes volunteer community service. The 2010 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards online application is now available.  

Students in grades 5-12 may apply - who are legal residents of any US State or the District of Columbia who have engaged in a volunteer activity that occurred at least partly during the 12 months prior to the date of application. 

Students must submit a completed application to a school principal or the head of an officially designated local organization by November 2, 2009. The Principal will select ONE candidate to submit to the State Competition. 

Two winners from each state will be awarded $1,000 unrestricted funds and will be invited to a four-day celebration events in Washington, D.C., with one parent or guardian.  All expenses will be paid by the program.
