How To Apply for a Scholarship

Always remember to print neatly with black ink, preferably the SAME black pen for the entire application.

Most committees will not consider your application if you do not follow the directions completely. For example, if they asked for a TYPED essay, do not submit a handwritten one.  If the deadline for notifications of winners has passed and you have not heard anything, feel free to email or call them to learn your status.

Most applications will clearly define the deadline date.  If "Postmarked by Deadline" is stated, then you must have it postmarked from the Post Office before that date.  If "Received by Deadline" is stated, then you should MAIL it one week before that date to ensure they receive it for consideration.  Late applications are usually set aside or discarded and not considered.

Make copies of your applications for your records!  You should keep track of the dates and watch for letters in the mail notify you as to whether you won the award.  Most will list winners names on their official website.

If the applications ask for a photograph, always submit a school photo, if possible.  Do NOT submit a photo of you at the beach in your bathing suit or in your Friday night party outfit, or your prom dress.  Remember, you should treat this application as if you were applying for the job of your dreams.  Impress them with your neatness!
