You MUST complete the community service paperwork BEFORE you begin your community service hours and turn them into Mrs. Roberts in the Career Lab or you will NOT receive credit for your work.

It is easy to register at Sweat Monkey and gain access to LOTS of community service opportunities and paying jobs, too!  This year will begin a transition to a paperless community service program, so register at Sweat Monkey today to get a jump start on the process.

Dundee Fall Festival - October 31, 2009 - 5:00 - 10:00 pm -  This is the annual Halloween celebration, and they need 15 volunteers to help with the games, rides, and concessions.  Dundee Community Center is located at 604 E. Main St in Dundee. 

Silver Garland Applications are Being Accepted!

The Silver Garland Award in each category is given to the student whose record of service to school and/or community best exemplifies the unselfish use of his or her abilites to help others.  Hours not accepted by the School District are eligible for this award.

The categories are: 

Art                Athletics                Citizenship                    English/Literature

Foreign Language         Journalism           Mathematics             Music

Performing Arts                 Science               Vocational/Technical

 

If you are a SENIOR and would like to apply for these prestigious awards, see Mrs. Roberts for application.  You may apply for more than one category, but once the final selection is made, you will be nominated in only one.  Deadline for completed applications back to Mrs. Roberts is November 13, 2009. If there is more than one candidate per category, the selection committee will make the final selection.   

Eastside Elementary - Needs Volunteers - Bilingual Spanish and Haitian Creole for on-going events.  Watch for dates to be posted.

 

Polk County Teen Court - Teen Court is a juvenile prevention program for first-time offenders who have committed a misdemeanor offense, and is based on the philosophy that juveniles judged by a true jury of their peers are less likely to continue their unlawful behavior. It is truly a valuable learning experience for those students who serve as volunteer attorneys, clerk, bailiffs, and jurors, while being given valuable insight into the legal system and the inner workings of a courtroom. Any student enrolled in grades 9 - 12 may volunteer in Teen Court.  Must maintain satisfactory grades and have a clean academic record.  Volunteers must attend sessions regularly and are required to sign and abide by Teen Court Oath of Confidentiality and Release Agreement. Community service hours are awarded.  Applications in the Career Lab and in the Criminal Justice Academy.  There is a LIMITED TIME for enrollment into this program.  IF you are interested, sign up NOW or you may not be able to sign up again until next school year. There is a Mandatory training session before you can participate.

Alta Vista Elementary needs Spanish speaking students and Haitian speaking students to assist with Orientation events, Parent-Teacher Conferences, and other school events.  If  you are interested in becoming an Alta Vista volunteer, please contact Mrs. Roberts in the Career Lab to be placed on their contact list. The dates for parent conferences that we need interpreters for are as follows:     

  Thursday, December 10 3:15-6:30

 Thursday, February 11 3:15-6:30

 Thursday, May 6 3:15-6:30

Historic Bok Tower Sanctuary needs volunteers to help clean up light debris.  Must be 18 years or older, have photo ID.

 

Students.gov - Dozens of federal, state and local opportunities to help. Type "volunteer" into the search box to find lots of ways to help different government agencies.

 

Polk Environmental Education Resource Center - Needs volunteers to assist with trail clean-up, gardening, exhibit maintenance, general office work, and docents.  863-965-5479.

 

Winter Haven/Auburndale Adult Literacy Council - 863-293-0559 - Those with great reading skills can volunteer and tutor adults who are learning to read.

Historic Dundee Depot and Museum - 103 Main Street, 863-419-3145, 439-1312.  Volunteers needed to help keep museum open on Saturdays and at least one day a week.
